Welcome 2014 and DUKES 40th anniversary!

The DUKES are entering 2014 and the 40th anniversary of the DUKES under John Shoup’s management.  We have prepared ten different shows that demonstrate the versatility and musicality of the band.  The current DUKES are quintessential New Orleans.  We have Zydeco twists and Mardi Gras revelry and country twang and voodoo haunts while always keeping one foot firmly planted in traditional jazz.  This is the DUKES’ trademark.

Our newest addition, Joe Kennedy, sings and swings the music of Jerry Lee Lewis and Louis Prima and is featured on early Duke Ellington and Fats Waller.  Ryan Burrage’s masterful soloing and in-depth knowledge of early jazz, with a primary focus on Sydney Bechet, give an authentic spin to everything New Orleans. Paul Thibodeaux brings the street beat and original drum beats that create a youthful and refreshing groove to classic jazz, blues zydeco, and swing.  Alan Broome sings with his Louis Armstrong growl, while swinging on upright bass, then picks up the sousaphone and riffs away on New Orleans second line grooves.  Richard Scott’s trombone tailgating is the tip of the iceberg as he is a master at piano, upright bass, piano, drums, vocals and accordion.

The DUKES are part of a legacy that has established excellence and interaction within the ensemble.   It is exciting as the bandleader to lead this handpicked assortment of talent and be part of this exciting time in the DUKES history.  I look forward to 2014  as the band progresses and draws in new audiences.
