Born in Staunton, Virginia, Richard Scott (Obenschain) began playing piano at age four, and took up the trombone while in elementary school. He fell in love with a DUKES of Dixieland LP he found in his parent's stereo cabinet, and his fascination with New Orleans music grew as he began to listen to other Dixieland masters. While in high school he began playing with a local Dixieland group called the "St. Clair Street Band", and played in local parades with his own group, called the "Queen City Jazz Band". He studied trombone at James Madison University and after graduating, performed on accordion at Busch Gardens theme park and as a pianist aboard Carnival Cruise ships. He rode a train to New Orleans and made the French Quarter his home in 2000. In addition to working with the DUKES and on Bourbon Street, Richard has worked as a park ranger at the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park, where he helps with children's programs and in groups that teach young musicians how to play New Orleans Jazz.
"The best thing about playing on the Natchez with the DUKES every night is getting to meet new people from all over the world and share with them the New Orleans music we love" says Scott. Coming to the city was like coming home: he would listen to all the music he could find. Giving in to the muse, he moved to New Orleans. Scott was previously the DUKES pianist but has to transitioned over to the Trombone and Banjo with the arrival of "Big Joe" Kennedy. Scott's trombone and banjo will drive the band through many tunes, and sparkles on its own on his solo riffs.
